The diner was as normal and ordinary an environment as the Underground lair was futuristic, and Phoebe couldn’t decide anymore which she preferred. In the last day, she’d grown addicted to the rush, the constant barrage of questions badgering her brain, and the thought that something was about to happen around every corner. Yet, she still needed this one moment to look Crowne in the eye and be eighteen, to think of him as handsome, to feel goosebumps rise on her skin when he brushed close and have her head swirl at the tilt of his head, the curve of his smile. She needed to feel smitten and think all those silly thoughts girls do over the boy they’re falling for.
Her elbows perched on the booth’s table, she bent forward and sipped her drink, the rush of cool bubbles, tickling her tongue, and she flashed him a smile, she hoped would keep his attention. It did, his eyes saying way more than his words ever would.
He was afraid to feel anything, but that didn’t mean he was incapable. Maybe it was both held back and pushed forward by all the time they were spending together, but whatever the case, she would help him through it because no way was she ever returning to how it was before she got on that bus.
Phoebe folded her foot beneath her bottom and sat back, compressing it with her weight. “My earliest memory is crying for someone to pick me up. I was in a large room with several other children, all of them crying, too. No one ever came to get me, and I guess I must’ve fallen asleep. Probably, I was hungry or wet.”
Crowne’s brow furrowed, his unhappiness forming on it.
“My next one, I was a little older. I was being shaken by a woman who told me I was worthless.”
He coughed. “You’re not worthless.”
A smile crawled on her lips. “I know that now. But when I was fifteen, I only knew rage. A couple girls got me involved in petty crimes. That’s how I ended up at the home. It was billed as ‘a better environment’, but we both know how that turned out.”
Making a second consideration, Phoebe slid from the booth and sat at Crowne’s side. She lifted his arm and snuggled up against him. He smelled great. He felt even better. Though, she sensed his reluctance.
“Who am I?” she asked. “It’s bothering you, so out with it. I promise not to either explode or dissolve into tears.”
He sucked in a breath. “September eleventh, two thousand one, the Twin Towers, we had a warning, but failed to stop it.”
Phoebe craned her head back. “The Underground knew?”
He nodded. “That was, of course, way before my time, but your father was there.”
“My dad was involved in a terrorist plot?”
“Not exactly. His name was Zachary Heath. He worked for us, higher up than Kelly, handling communications. He was the guy monitoring the airwaves, and he should have told someone it was coming days before.
